My aim in painting is to express the quality of light, harmony or contrast of colour, together with the dramatic or subtle tonal contrasts inherent in the subject. My work reflects a lifelong passion for nature and a love of art.
Watercolour, my preferred medium, has the transparency to suggest the play of light on petals, or the flood of light on water. Its palette can be either subtle or dynamic. This is perfect for conveying the varied shades of a single flower petal, or the imperceptibly gradated shades of a distant mountain. Tonal contrasts range from the stark white of the paper to striking dark tones mixed from rich pigments.
Specialising in flower painting, my objective is to capture the delicacy of flowers and the transparency of their petals by using the wet-into-wet method. This allows a fluidity of expression and movement, characteristic of the flower itself. The flow of the paint used wet-into-wet is ideally suited to the soft focus background of a flower painting. Dry brush techniques are used to add detail.
As a watercolour painter in Wales, I also apply these techniques to landscapes in watercolour, inspired by the beauty of natural locations (in particular Pembrokeshire Landscapes, West Wales Landscapes and, more recently, Brecon Landscapes), and by the effects of light and changing weather conditions on the landscape.
My main subjects are flower paintings, botanical illustration, landscape paintings, seascape paintings and bird paintings.
